The Veterans Memorial Buttonwood Park and Zoo is a premier recreation center in New Bedford. The park and zoo encompass 97 acres in the west-central part of the city. The newly rennovated zoo houses almost 150 animals of 35 different species including two Asian elephants, Emily and Ruth. The zoo reopened on August 12, 2000 after a major four-year rennovation.

The park features softball, tennis, basketball, children's activities, fitness course, flower garden, and a pond with paddle boats. It is the scene of the annual Whaling City Festival held each July.
