Welcome to the New Bedford Area Visitor Guide. New Bedford earned its place in history as "the whaling city" during the 19th century when New Bedford whaling ships blanketed the world's oceans. From its rich history and unique architecture, the New Bedford area takes pride in its heritage.
The far-sighted efforts of New Bedford citizens in restoring and maintaining many historic buildings and the historic district has paid dividends. In October of 1996, the Congress of the United States designated a 13 block, 20 acre area of New Bedford as the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park. President William J. Clinton signed the legislation in November of 1996.
Although steeped in history and tradition, the area has much to offer in the modern world. This visitor guide features the many things to see and do in the City of New Bedford and the area towns of Acushnet, Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Freetown, Marion, Mattapoisett, Rochester, and Westport.
