Pope's Island
New Bedford, MA 02740
This large granite and bronze statue overlooks New Bedford harbor in tribute to the Portuguese
prince Henry the Navigator. Prince Henry is credited as being the father of
modern celestial navigation techniques.
In the early days of the Age of Discovery, Prince Henry
and his cosmographers provided seamen with techniques for determining their position when out
of sight of land.
Dedicated in 1994, the statue was a gift to the city from the Prince Henry Society
of New Bedford in conjunction with the Portuguese government.
