The second free public library in the nation was established by the city of New Bedford in 1852.
From 1856 to 1910, the library was located on the second floor of what is now City Hall. The
current building is a Greek and Egyptian Revival granite structure across the street from City Hall.
The library houses a fine collection of historical and genealogical materials as well as one of the
largest collection of whaling log books in the world. Lining the impressive marble staircases is a
collection of historical plaques and photographs.
The outside grounds of the library feature the Whaleman's Memorial and the Lewis Temple memorial statue.
The newly renovated downtown branch is the center of the five-branch New Bedford Free Public Library system.
