Housed in the renovated Anthony J. Catojo, Jr. Building, this museum features displays of the City of New Bedford's rich and historic art collection. The building was constructed in 1918 and was formerly known as the Vault Building. It was renamed in honor of the late city councillor Anthony J. Catojo, Jr.
The museum features a collection of paintings by 19th and early 20th century New Bedford artists, including Albert Bierstadt, William Bradford, and Charles Henry Gifford. The museum also hosts exhibits by local and international artists displaying art in all media. Visit the museum's official Web site for the latest information about current exhibits.
The museum also offers workshops and art classes in pottery, mask making, and story writing. Contact Lyn at 508-961-3073 for registration. Each class has a $40.00 fee.
The museum is located in the heart of downtown New Bedford, across the street from New Bedford City Hall and the main branch of the New Bedford Public Library.
The New Bedford Art Museum is an independent, non-profit organization, and is dependent on funds raised from individuals, businesses, and private grants to pay for all programs and operating costs. The City of New Bedford provides in-kind support through the generous provision of space, custodial services and utilities.
