John Cooke Memorial
Foot of Pilgrim Ave.
Fairhaven, MA 02719
This large stone memorial recognizes the 1695 burial of John Cooke, the last surviving male member of the original Pilgrims who journeyed to the New World on the Mayflower.
Cooke was one of the original group of colonists who purchased a tract of land from Wampanoag Indian Chief Massasoit and his son, Wamsutta (1652). The land (Old Dartmouth) encompassed present day Acushnet, Dartmouth, Fairhaven, New Bedford, Westport and Little Compton, RI. Cooke was one of the original Pilgrims who eventually settled in the area.
The small park area also includes a stone memorial to Joshua Slocum, the first man to sail around the world alone. Mr. Slocum began his solo journey from this area.
