In 1840, stonemason Haile Luther built this home on Grinnell and South Second streets. Haile Luther was born in 1800 in Warren RI. His father Barnabas Luther, a shoemaker, was a descendant of Capt. John Luther, an original settler.
The Greek Revival style has a roof with the true pitch of a Greek temple. The South-side of the roof (shown at the right of the photo) includes a Hathaway arch, in which the edge of the second-floor windows extend into the dormer. This type of arch seems unique to New Bedford.
The Haile Luther House was moved to its present location in 1977 through the efforts of the state, city, and the Waterfront Historic Area LeaguE (WHALE) to save it from demolition. The entire foundation of the house was numbered, dismantled, and reconstructed on the present site. The house was then moved and re-placed on the foundation.
The Haile Luther House is located within The New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park. It houses the offices of the Bristol County Convention and Visitor's Bureau.
