Black Heritage Trail
The trail starts at the home of Sgt. William H. Carney, the first man of color to be awarded the
Congressional Medal of Honor. Sgt. Carney was a member of the 54th Massachusetts regiment (the movie Glory is based on the 54th) and awarded his medal for bravery at the battle of Fort Wagner, South Carolina during Civil War.
The trail continues to the blacksmith shop of Lewis
Temple, the inventor of a toggle harpoon that revolutionized the whaling industry in the early 1800's.
Also on the trail is the mother church of Bishop Charles M. "Daddy"
Grace, the religious leader of over three million followers.
Information and maps are available at the Downtown Visitor Center, 33 William St., and Waterfront Visitor Center, Pier 3, on the New Bedford waterfront.
